Roast Ground Coffee

One of the most confusing experiences for the new coffee enthusiast is shopping for coffee. There are innumerable brands, names, origins, roast profiles, among other variables which might cause the consumer to end up with an unsuitable coffee for their predilection. Here I will show you how to buy and prepare coffee.

If possible, avoid buying your coffee from a supermarket (unless it's instant...yuk!) Ideally you should buy your coffee from a roaster, coffee shops who get theirs delivered every other day, or even better, buy freshly roasted coffee online; it's widely available nowadays. If you must buy your java at the grocery store, make sure the coffee is not kept near strong sources of odors, like fish, onions, etc.

Purchase your beans whole and grind them right before preparing your coffee, this will ensure maximum aroma from your beans. Buy enough coffee to last you for a couple of weeks. After that period, coffee loses its fragrance and you will end up drinking a cup of stale black water with a distant hint of coffee.

Never store your coffee in the refrigerator or in the freezer, this is the fastest method to ruin a perfectly good coffee. To properly store your coffee, do it in an airtight container, away from light, heat or moisture, and always try to store whole beans.

There are many ways to prepare coffee, but the three basic methods are French press, drip method, and espresso.

For French press method you should grind your beans to a medium grind. Preheat your French press by filling it half way with hot water and discarding such water after the glass is warm to the touch. Add the desired amount of ground coffee and water, which should be hot but not quite boiling and stir. Wait 2 and a half minutes before slowly depressing the plunger. Serve and enjoy!

Drip brewing is the most common method and ironically is the one with the least aroma or flavor. For drip method, your coffee should be ground coarse. It is a good idea to, by trial and error, know how much ground coffee makes a perfect cup, so make sure your ratio coffee - water is correct.

Preparing great espresso requires two things: a good espresso maker (preferably pump driven) and good, freshly roasted coffee beans. Your espresso beans are usually roasted dark and must be grounded finely. Make sure you pack the coffee tight in to the portafiller (the handle with the filter) and clean any lose coffee around the rim, this will ensure a tight fit and produce optimum crema.

Experiment and determine which method you prefer, or which blend and roast profile suits your preferences. Remember, a good coffee starts with good beans. Enjoy!
